Spin-Friendly Pitch Expected in Pune

According to reports, black soil has been used for the pitch in Pune. It is expected that spinners will get more help. That is why the Indian captain can place three spinners in the team. The trio of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav can be seen playing together.

India had a similar strategy in the Bangalore Test as well. However, continuous overcast and rain interruptions made the M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch fertile for the fast bowlers. This is also said to be one of the reasons behind India being bowled out for just 46 runs in the first innings.

This is the third time the Test match is being played at the Maharashtra Cricket Stadium (MCA). The first Test match was played here in 2016-17, in which Australia defeated the hosts India by a whopping 333 runs. The spinners dominated that match.

The cracks in the pitch helped the ball to take turns. The spinners took advantage of this opportunity from day one. 31 out of 40 wickets in this match were taken by the spinners. However, after the match, the referee rated this pitch as a poor pitch.

History of Pune Test Matches

For the second time in 2019, the thrill of the Test match took place in Pune. This was a match between India and South Africa, in which Virat Kohli scored 254 runs to reach his double century. India won the match by an innings and 137 runs.

In this match too, the spinners got help from the first day itself. Hence, Team India can field with three spinners in the second Test match against New Zealand.
