India Fights Back After Poor Start in First Test Against New Zealand

The third day of the first Test match between Team India and New Zealand is over. Team India scored 231 runs in 49 overs with the loss of 3 wickets in reply of 356 runs till the end of the game. Virat Kohli was dismissed on the last ball of the day.

So the end of Team India’s day could not be sweet. Virat scored 70 runs. Sarfaraz Khan returned unbeaten on 70 runs. Before that, captain Rohit scored 52 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 35 runs. Before that, New Zealand scored 402 runs in the first innings in reply to Team India’s 46 runs to take a solid lead of 356 runs.

New Zealand’s Strong First Innings

New Zealand’s duo of Rachin Ravindra and Darrell Mitchell started the third day with 180 for 3. But the bowlers of Team India gave New Zealand 4 quick blows and made a comeback in the match. That made New Zealand 233 for 7. But after that Team Southee gave good support to Rachin Ravindra. Rachin and the team put on a partnership that turned the match around.

The duo shared a partnership of 137 runs for the eighth wicket. So Team India again went on the back foot. Mohammad Siraj broke the pair by dismissing Team Southee for 65 runs. Azaz Patel was then dismissed lbw by Kuldeep Yadav. As soon as Rachin Ravindra got out, New Zealand’s innings ended.

New Zealand scored 402 all out in 91.3 overs and took a huge lead of 356 runs. Rachin Ravindra contributed the highest score of 134 runs for New Zealand. While Devon Conway scored 91 runs. Team Southee scored 65 runs and provided decisive support. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja both took 3 wickets each for Team India. Mohammad Siraj dismissed two batters. R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah took 1 wicket each.

India’s Promising Second Innings

After being bowled out for 46 runs in the first innings, Team India got off to a fantastic start in the second innings. Captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal both shared an opening partnership of 72 runs. Then came the stumping in an attempt to hit a successful big hit. Yashasvi scored 35 runs in 52 balls. Rohit Sharma also got out after a few overs.

Rohit had a good start. A big innings was expected from him. But Rohit was unlucky. Rohit was bowled. Rohit scored 52 runs in 63 balls with 1 six and 8 fours. Due to this, the condition of Team India was 2 for 95.

Virat and Sarfaraz Keep India Alive

After Yashasvi-Rohit got out, Virat and Sarfaraz Khan put on an amazing partnership. Both of them batted ODI style in the Test match by hitting all around the field. Due to the fast batting of these two, Team India could reach 200 overs. Both of them tried to score more runs after scoring half-centuries. With this pair set, New Zealand’s headache is increasing. But there was a mess on the last ball.

Virat was caught out on the last ball of the 49th over. Virat challenged this decision and took a review. But it became clear that Virat was out. Team India lost their third wicket as Virat got out. Virat scored 70 runs in 102 balls with 8 fours and 1 six. As soon as Virat got out, the third day’s play also ended.

Sarfraz and Virat shared a partnership of 136 runs for the third wicket. While Sarfraz Khan returned not out for 70 runs in 78 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Azaz Patel took 2 wickets from New Zealand. Glenn Phillips caught Virat on the last ball and dealt a big blow to Team India.

India will need strong batting from Sarfaraz and the rest of the team to close the gap and challenge New Zealand on Day 4.
