Historic Performance by the Indian Women’s Team

Indian Women’s team registered a world record against South Africa in the Chennai Test. Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana shared a record partnership of 292 runs for the first wicket. Smriti missed his half-century by 1 run, while Shafali scored a record double-century. The Indian women’s team posted a world record of 525 for 4 on the first day of the Test, which was never achieved by any men’s team, let alone the women’s team.

Smriti scored 149 runs in 161 balls with 27 fours and 1 six. In the 52nd over, Delami Tucker gave India the first blow. But, Shafali was not fooled by anyone and created history by scoring a double century. She became the second Indian woman cricketer after Mithali Raj to score a double century in Test cricket. Shafali returned after being run out for 205 off 197 balls with 23 fours and 8 sixes. Shafali (20 years and 152 days) is second among the young female cricketers who have scored a double century in Test cricket. India’s Milati Raj (19 years and 254 days vs. England, 2002) tops this record.

Contributions from Other Batters

Smriti Mandhana also made a significant contribution with her 149 runs off 161 balls, including 27 fours and 1 six. Unfortunately, she missed her half-century by just one run before being dismissed by Delami Tucker. Following the remarkable partnership of Shafali and Smriti, Jemima Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur continued to build the innings. Jemima scored 55 runs off 94 balls, while Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 42 off 76 balls. Richa Ghosh also added to the total with a quick 43 runs off 33 balls.

Setting New Records

This is the most runs scored by a team in one day of Test cricket (both). Earlier in 2002, Sri Lanka scored 508 runs against Bangladesh. India has scored more than 500 runs in an innings for the first time in Tests in women’s cricket. The previous highest score was 467 against England in 2002.
