IPL 2025 Mega Auction: New Rules Announced, Teams Allowed to Retain 6 Players

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: New Rules Announced, Teams Allowed to Retain 6 Players

The 18th season of IPL will be played in March 2025. Before that, a mega auction will be held for this season. The rules for this mega auction have been announced by the IPL Governing Council. Accordingly, each team can retain 6 players before the mega auction. Also, the rule of ‘Right to Match’ i.e. ‘RTM Card’ has been introduced once again. This rule will help the franchises retain key players in the team. It has also been decided to implement the impact player rule till 2027. Information about this has been given from the IPL X platform.

Teams Can Retain 6 Players, RTM Cards Return

As per the rules, a team can retain a maximum of 6 players, including RTM. Also if a team retains 5 players, they can use 1 RTM in the auction. Also, after retaining 6 players, the team will have to retain 5 capped players, while one uncapped player will also have to be included.

A team can retain a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian or overseas), and they are required to retain at least 1 uncapped player. The RTM rule will add further flexibility, allowing teams to match the highest bid for a player from their previous squad during the auction.

Auction Purse Increased by INR 20 Crore

To add more excitement to the 2025 season, the auction purse for each team has been increased by INR 20 crore, taking the total to INR 120 crore. This extra budget gives teams more room to build competitive squads, but any money spent on retained players will be deducted from this total. For example, if a team retains 5 players, they will have INR 45 crore left for the auction.

New Rules for Foreign Players

A rule regarding the retention policy of foreign players has been announced in the IPL Governing Council meeting. As a rule, if a player has not registered for the upcoming auction, he will not be able to register for the next auction.

Many players refuse to play in the IPL at the moment to play for the national team. Now a rule has been made to prevent this kind of thing. If a player sold in the auction refuses to play, he will be banned for 2 years. Also, the name cannot be registered in the auction.

Impact Player Rule Extended, Match Fees Introduced

Fans can also look forward to the Impact Player rule continuing until IPL 2027. This strategic rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, giving them more flexibility.

In addition, for the first time, players will earn a match fee of INR 7.5 lakh per game, on top of their contracted salary. This new fee structure aims to incentivize performance and reward consistency across the season.
