Franchise Teams Push for Increased Retention Options

There is no telling how much a player will bid for if his name comes up for auction. Purse constraints and high bids at auctions make it more difficult for franchises to acquire the players they want. So to ease the way of team building by retaining the players in their fleet, the strategy of pre-booking the players through retain is beneficial for the franchisee. Know the current rules regarding player retention?

According to the retention rule that has been implemented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for IPL franchises from 2021 onwards, the franchise team can retain up to 4 players before the auction. In this, more than 3 Indians or 2 foreign players have to be preferred. Franchise teams can play the game of adding a substitute player to the team through Right to Match (RTM) cards.

Benefits of Increased Player Retention for Teams

The ability to retain more players before the auction would be a major advantage for franchise teams. Auctions can be unpredictable, with high bids and purse limitations often preventing teams from securing their desired players. By retaining up to six players, teams can better ensure the continuity of their squad, making team-building more efficient. If the BCCI implements this rule along with the RTM card option, teams will have greater flexibility and security in retaining key players, ultimately strengthening their chances in the upcoming IPL seasons.
