Lalit Modi Warns IPL Owners Against Investing in The Hundred League

IPL founder Lalit Modi has issued a warning to franchise owners interested in investing in The Hundred. He claims that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is misleading everyone under the guise of selling rights. He suggests that the ECB might privatize the league, potentially selling 100% stakes in all 8 teams.

Sources suggest that IPL franchise owners, including those from Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals, are considering investing. If this happens, the ECB could earn £1.8 million (₹20 crore) annually from 2024 to 2028.

Lalit Modi warns IPL owners about investing in The Hundred League.

According to Lalit Modi, the ECB is misrepresenting The Hundred League, and the international rights have no real value. He advises IPL owners to look at leagues like SA20, CPL, Big Bash, and ILT20. None of which are generating revenue from foreign markets.

He also criticized the projected valuation of £300 million, calling it unrealistic. Modi pointed out that teams could be bought for $5 million, with Lord’s potentially costing $25 million. He believes it’s not a worthwhile investment and warned that the ECB is attempting to turn the tournament into a 20-over competition, separate from its media rights, with 100% ownership.
