SL vs NZ Rain-Shortened Match: New Zealand Outplays Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka got off to a poor start chasing the target. Both the openers failed to make an impact and Kusal Mendis got out cheaply, adding to his woes. Charith Aslanka’s odd run-out left the team reeling at 22/4 inside the powerplay.
The Kiwi pacers took full advantage of swing, seam and bounce to create difficulties for Sri Lanka’s top order. Kamindu Mendis tried to make a comeback for Sri Lanka by scoring 64 runs off 66 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes.
William O’Rourke formed important partnerships, including a fifth-wicket stand of 57 runs with Janith Liyanage (22 off 31 balls) and 47 runs with Chamindu Wickremesinghe (17 off 27 balls). Despite his efforts, Kamindu received little support and wickets kept falling at the other end. He was dismissed in the 29th over, leaving Sri Lanka 125 runs short of the target.
William O’Rourke was the best of the New Zealand bowlers, taking three for 31, while Jacob Duffy (2/30) took the early lead. Mitchell Santner (1/14), Matt Henry (1/19) and Nathan Smith took one wicket each to ensure the dominance of the visiting team.
