Former Australia cricketers Ricky Ponting and Ian Healy have called for Australia A captain Nathan McSweeney to be selected for the vacant opening spot in the national squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India starting in Perth on November 22.
After David Warner’s retirement earlier this year and Steve Smith’s return to his preferred number four position, Australia is looking for an opening batsman to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja. Players like McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Cameron Bancroft, and Marcus Harris are among the contenders to fill the void.

McSweeney Stands Out Among Contenders
“In my opinion, the only contender to fill this spot is Nathan McSweeney, who was born in Queensland and is now playing for South Australia. He has also done well for Australia A,” Ponting said on the ‘ICC Review Show’. ‘Healy told SEN Radio, ‘I am happy that people have seen how well Nathan McSweeney can bat. I know him well because he is associated with my club. The Australian selectors also know about him because he recently performed very well for South Australia. He seems to be the most prepared among the four contenders.’

Warner Open to Return, but Captain Says No
However, a few days ago Warner had said that if Australia needs him for the Test series to be played against India, then he can return from retirement. His hopes of a comeback were dashed by Australian Test team captain Pat Cummins. Cummins had told in a podcast that Warner had asked him to return but he had asked the former batsman to focus on BBL.
