Rohit Sharma’s ODI Captaincy Future: ICC Poster Sparks Speculation

Shubham Sangale·

Rohit Sharma’s ODI Captaincy: A new promotional poster from the ICC for the India vs England limited-overs series in 2026 has reignited discussions about Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s ODI captain. The poster features Rohit alongside England’s Harry Brook, making fans wonder if the 38-year-old will continue to lead the team until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Rohit has already retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win and from Test cricket following the England series. This means he now plays only ODIs, with his full focus on the 50-over format. His presence in the ICC poster has been seen by many as a hint that he will remain captain for at least the near future.

Rohit Sharma Dismisses ODI Retirement Rumours

After guiding India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title, Rohit remains India’s ODI skipper. Despite repeated media speculation about his retirement from the format, Rohit has made it clear that he intends to keep playing and leading the team.

Alongside Rohit, Virat Kohli is also facing questions about his international future. Both have been pillars of India’s batting and leadership for more than a decade. Now aged 36 and 38 respectively, both legends have retired from T20s and Tests, leaving fans curious about whether they will be part of India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad.

Gambhir’s Perspective: “Age is Just a Number”

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged everyone not to jump to conclusions. He reminded that before the 2027 ODI World Cup, there is still the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India in February–March. “The entire focus after England will be on the T20 World Cup,” Gambhir said, noting that November–December 2027 is still two and a half years away.

He also stressed that selection will depend on performance rather than age: “If you keep performing well, then age is just a number.”

For now, it appears Rohit Sharma is set to continue leading India’s ODI team, with the door still open for him to captain in the 2027 World Cup—if form and fitness stay on his side.
