Shakib Al Hasan’s Controversies: Latest Dispute in Global T20 Canada

Shakib Al Hasan has once again found himself in controversy. This time, during the Global T20 Canada 2024 tournament, Shakib, who is the captain of the Bangla Tigers Mississauga team, caused a stir by refusing to play a Super Over in their Eliminator match against the Toronto Nationals. Due to continuous rain, the match had to be decided by a minimum of five overs on each side. If the match was still tied, a Super Over would be used to determine the winner. Despite the referee’s attempts to convince him, Shakib refused to comply, believing it was unfair to his team.

As a result of Shakib’s decision, the Bangla Tigers Mississauga team was eliminated from the tournament, and the Toronto Nationals were declared the winners. The Nationals advanced to Qualifier 2 as a result. The Bangla Tigers had won four matches but lost three. Shakib failed to make a significant impact with both bat and ball. The Qualifier 1 between Brampton Wolves and Montreal Tigers was also affected by rain, with Montreal advancing to the final due to their higher position in the points table.

Shakib’s Availability for Bangladesh vs. Pakistan Test Series

Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, starting on August 21 in Rawalpindi, is uncertain. According to reports, Shakib, who has been playing in the Global T20 Canada League after competing in the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA, was given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) until August 12. However, ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, including the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has cast doubt on Shakib’s return.

Moreover, Shakib, who was an elected MP from the Awami League party, is no longer a parliament member due to the dissolution of the Bangladesh Parliament. Additionally, Shakib’s fitness for red-ball cricket is a concern for selectors, as he has been playing T20 matches since May. The main issue now is whether he can return to Bangladesh and then travel to Pakistan in time for the series
