Upon the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer to the Asia Cup squad, having fully recovered from injuries, former captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Kapil Dev, extended a warm welcome to them. Both these players had been sidelined from the team for an extended period due to their injuries. There has also been criticism regarding the lack of complete clarity surrounding KL Rahul’s injury situation. Meanwhile, reports have emerged suggesting that KL Rahul might miss the opening matches of the Asia Cup.
Kapil Dev commented, “Every player needs to undergo a fitness test. With the World Cup around the corner, you can’t afford to not give these players a chance. Imagine the scenario if they were to play a live World Cup match and get injured. It would be a costly setback for the entire team.” He further emphasized, “Giving them an opportunity to bowl and bat here would be a positive step. It will help boost their confidence. Having a player get injured during the World Cup would be unfortunate. Those players who have recovered from injuries deserve a chance. If they are fit, they should be allowed to play in the World Cup,” Kapil Dev concluded.
No Shortage of Talent
“We are not lacking in talent. If the players are not fit, there’s an opportunity to alter the squad for the World Cup. This tournament provides a chance to construct a strong team. The Asia Cup serves as the ideal platform for this purpose. Our hope is to witness commendable performances from these players. However, if any doubts persist, including them in the team should be reconsidered,” he clarified. “Not giving them a chance would be detrimental not only to the players but also to the selectors. The World Cup matches are taking place in India. Yet, it’s crucial to select the best and fittest team for this occasion,” Kapil Dev advised.
