The Twenty20 World Cup, jointly hosted by West Indies and America in June 2024, has prompted early preparations by the BCCI.
Before the tournament, the Indian team has 11 international Twenty20 matches scheduled, and they’ve already played 5 against Australia.
After the defeat in the ODI World Cup final, India’s captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and head of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar held a five-hour meeting.
Top BCCI officials also attended, and together they devised the roadmap for the Twenty20 World Cup tournament.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah have requested rest from the limited overs series during the tour of South Africa.
Therefore, the upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan will serve as the final opportunity for the selection committee to pick the ultimate XI for World Cup preparations.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Rohit and Bumrah are considered certain for a place in the Twenty20 World Cup tournament, but there’s uncertainty surrounding Virat’s inclusion.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, and Treasurer Ashish Shelar were also present at this meeting.
Neither Rohit nor Virat has played Twenty20 cricket since the 2022 Twenty20 World Cup. However, Rohit scored 597 runs in the ODI World Cup, while Virat scored 765 runs.
Rohit led the Indian team to the final. Consequently, BCCI intends for Rohit to lead the team in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup.
The BCCI and selection committee are seeking an aggressive batsman for the Twenty20 World Cup and have shown a preference for Ishan Kishan. They believe he is the right choice for the number three position.
