Why Did RCB-W Drop Shreyanka Patil for WPL 2025 Opener? Injury Update Inside

Shreyanka Patil Injury: Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) suffered a major setback in their opening match of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 against Gujarat Giants at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

Star spinner Shreyanka Patil was ruled out of the team. Patil, who was the leading bowler in RCB’s winning campaign last season and won the Purple Cap with 13 wickets in eight matches, was ruled out of the team due to a long-term injury.

Shreyanka Patil Ruled Out Due to Injury

The BCCI had earlier confirmed that Shreyanka was suffering from β€˜shin splints’, which kept her out of cricket from the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. She subsequently missed India’s tour of Australia and the home series against West Indies and Ireland. Despite her efforts to recover, there has been no official update from RCB on her availability for the rest of the tournament.

On the other hand, RCB all-rounder Ellyse Perry confirmed before the match that she will not bowl in the opening matches of WPL 2025. The Australian player suffered a groin injury during the Women’s Ashes Test against England at the MCG last month. Although she is fit enough to bat, her bowling has been limited due to ongoing rehabilitation.

RCB Faces More Injury Concerns

Apart from Shreyanka and Perry, RCB is also without several key players. One of the team’s senior players, Sophie Devine, has decided to pull out of the tournament due to personal reasons. In addition, Sophie Molyneux, Kate Cross and Asha Sobhana are all out due to injuries. Meanwhile, RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first.

β€œIt’s good to be back in Baroda. We were here a month ago. I thought it would be Gujarat’s home ground but it seems it’s our home ground. We have to bowl first. β€œDew is a big factor, so it’s good to bowl a few overs before the dew sets in. Our practice session has been good, and preparations have been good. A few forced changes. Perry, Wareham, Danny and Kim are the four overseas players,” Smriti Mandhana said on the toss.
