Chasing Australia’s target of 444, India was bowled out for 234 and the Aussies won by 209 runs. Australia lifted the World Test Championship for the first time, while India had to settle for runners-up in the WTC Final for the second time in a row. After India’s defeat, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ricky Ponting criticized the decision to bowl first and not play R Ashwin. But, at the same time, former president of BCCI and former captain of India Sourav Ganguly (Sourav Ganguly) captain Rohit Sharma(Rohit Sharma) backed.
In an interview with Aaj Tak, Ganguly said, “When Virat Kohli decided to quit the captaincy, Rohit was the best option before the selection committee. Rohit has won five IPL titles. Whenever he got a chance to lead, he jumped at it. He also showed this maximum in the Asia Cup.
Ganguly emphasized the importance of Rohit, who won five IPL titles for Mumbai Indians. While doing so he compared the captaincy style between Rohit and Virat Kohli. Ganguly also said that leading a team in the IPL for two months is more challenging than a shorter tournament like the World Cup. He played in this year’s WTC Final. He lost, but the 2021 final had the same result. Then, under his leadership, Team India reached the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup. I think his personal performance was not good. But, in the 2021 World Cup, we stumbled in the league round. I have full faith in Rohit,” said Ganguly.
He further said, “Like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit has also won five IPL titles. Winning the IPL is not an easy task. It is a very challenging competition. I have been following this league closely for two years. Winning IPL is more difficult than World Cup. Because here in the league round you have to play 14 matches, then there is a playoff match. In the World Cup, you directly reach the semi-finals after 4-5 matches. In IPL you become champion after 16-17 matches. I still think that Rohit is the best option.
