Shreyas Iyer, the star Indian batsman, has been appointed as the new captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The announcement was made during an episode of the popular reality show Bigg Boss, marking a first in IPL history. Iyer, who was bought by Punjab Kings for a record ₹26.75 crore in the IPL auction, is now the second most expensive player in IPL history.

The announcement of Iyer’s appointment as captain has received mixed reactions. South African cricket legend AB de Villiers shared his thoughts on the unusual method of the announcement. In a video on his YouTube channel, de Villiers said, “I found it quite funny. It’s a new way of doing things. Normally, we are used to formal press conferences for such announcements, but this was a fresh approach.”
Iyer’s Leadership and Success in IPL
Shreyas Iyer has had an exceptional year in domestic and franchise cricket, including leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in 2024.
His ability to handle pressure and lead from the front has made him a valuable asset to Punjab Kings, who have struggled to make it to the playoffs since 2014. De Villiers also praised Iyer’s calm and composed leadership, noting his ability to manage a team under pressure.
In Punjab Kings, Iyer will reunite with coach Ricky Ponting, with whom he had success at Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2020. De Villiers believes that Iyer and Ponting together can bring positive changes to the team, and he expects a strong season for Punjab Kings in 2025.
