BCCI actively readies for IPL 2024, recently holding a mini auction in Dubai with significant player investments. An important decision on sponsorship is made, considering a ban on Chinese sponsorship.
The BCCI explicitly states in the IPL title sponsorship tender that countries without friendly relations with India won’t be considered.
The fixed sponsorship amount is 360 crores per annum. Previously, Vivo, a Chinese company, was the sponsor, but in 2020, amid India-China border tensions, BCCI replaced Vivo with Tata for a year.
In the current tender, BCCI specifies that bidders with ties to countries with strained relations with India won’t be considered.
Such bidders must provide shareholder information to the board before their bid is considered. The ban now extends to online betting, fantasy games, cryptocurrencies, and betting entities.
Companies in sports-related apparel production are also ineligible for title sponsorship bids. The contract spans five years, from 2024 to 2029.
