India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill is likely to miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, which begins on August 28 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gill, who was appointed as the North Zone captain, is reportedly unwell and is currently resting at home in Chandigarh. According to reports, the BCCI physios examined him recently and submitted a health status report to the board around 24 hours ago.
Although there has been no official confirmation from the North Zone selectors, they had anticipated Gill’s possible absence and had already prepared a replacement plan. Shubham Rohilla has been named as Gill’s replacement, while Ankit Kumar will now lead the North Zone side in the tournament.
Gill was unlikely to play the full tournament even if fit, as he is scheduled to join the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025, starting September 9 in the UAE. At best, he could have featured only in the North Zone’s opening match against the East Zone on August 28.
Gill returns home after a highly successful tour of England, where he scored 754 runs in five Tests during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. His stellar performance earned him a place in India’s Asia Cup T20 squad as the vice-captain.
Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, both part of the Asia Cup squad, will also be available for only the first game of the Duleep Trophy before joining the national team. Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral have been named as replacements for the pacers if North Zone progresses beyond the first match.
