Selection Process for the New Coach
BCCI Secretary Jai Shah informed PTI that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has shortlisted two candidates after conducting interviews. The CAC, comprising former cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Nayak, will make the final decision once they reach Mumbai. In the meantime, VVS Laxman will travel with the team to Zimbabwe for a series starting on July 6, until the new coach takes over from the Sri Lanka series.
Potential Candidate: Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir, mentor of IPL 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders, is one of the candidates for the head coach position. ESPN Cricinfo reported that Gambhir recently met with the CAC members. If selected, Gambhir’s tenure as head coach will begin on July 1, 2024, and last until December 31, 2027. During this period, Team India is set to participate in five ICC tournaments, including the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, and two editions of the World Test Championship.

Rahul Dravid’s Tenure
BCCI appointed Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach in November 2021. After that, Team India was out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The team reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Dravid’s tenure ended after the ODI World Cup in 2023, but his tenure was extended to the T20 World Cup as Team India reached the final.
