BCCI Discusses Retention Policy for IPL 2025
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently held a meeting with the franchise owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to discuss several key issues ahead of the 2025 mega auction. Among the topics were the impact player rule and the retention policy. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a special request to the BCCI, urging them to introduce a rule that would allow them to retain their iconic player, MS Dhoni, for the upcoming season. Reports suggest that the BCCI has agreed to CSK’s demand, which could lead to a major announcement regarding Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2025.

Revival of an Old Rule to Retain Dhoni
In the early years of the IPL, a rule allowed franchises to buy retired international players as uncapped players, provided they had been retired for at least five years. However, this rule was removed by the BCCI in 2021 as it was never utilized. During the recent meeting on July 31, CSK requested the revival of this rule to ensure Dhoni could continue playing in the IPL. Although only a few franchises supported CSK, sources indicate that the rule may return, with the BCCI likely to announce it along with other player regulations.

Will Dhoni Play in IPL 2025?
The retention policy for IPL 2025 is still under discussion. While some teams want to eliminate the mega auction, the BCCI is not ready. According to reports, the board may allow teams to retain up to six players before the mega auction, an increase from the current four. This potential change in the retention rules, combined with the revival of the uncapped player rule, has raised hopes that Dhoni might play in IPL 2025. Dhoni has stated that his participation will depend on the new retention rules, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the BCCI’s final decision.
